Tips to Boost the Health Benefits of Your Coffee

By Stepy Kamei

If you start your day with a cup of coffee in the morning, you certainly aren't alone. Millions of Americans start their day by getting some caffeine into their systems. Since it's so easy for many of us to remember this routine, you'd think we'd all have an easier time keeping up with healthier habits, such as taking vitamins and eating healthier breakfast meals. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to start the morning off by making the absolute best choices for your health. After all, mornings can be hectic as we run around trying to get ready to get to work on time, dealing with a possibly long commute or any last-minute errands we may need to run first.

Ideally, you'd be able to find the time to sit down to a nutritious and well-balanced meal. However, more realistically, sometimes that's just not an option. In that case, you may be pleasantly surprised to find out that there are ways you can at least boost the health benefits of your morning coffee.

Start Your Morning With Some Spice

If you want to start on the more mild side when it comes to enhancing your coffee, consider the popular spice cinnamon. You can easily sprinkle 1 teaspoon of this spice into your brew, or even into the beans before you grind them, for a delicious and healthy kick. Cinnamon is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and it also contains plenty of skin-protecting antioxidants. Cinnamon may also boost the immune system as well.

For something a little stronger, you can give ginger a try, in the same proportions as cinnamon. Ginger can aid in digestion, reduce feelings of nausea and stomach pain, and is also known for relieving muscle aches and pains.

Add Some Hearty Flavor

For a heartier brew, you may want to give mushroom coffee a try. Yes, you read that right. Reishi mushrooms are loaded with antioxidants and gut-boosting prebiotics. They also provide a hearty yet mellow boost to the taste of your morning brew.

Alternatively, you can give maca powder a try instead. Maca root contains loads of amino acids and is high in protein content. It also gives coffee a flavorful yet subtle boost of flavor.

Finally, you can always treat yourself to one tablespoon of cacao powder for a healthier take on the traditional mocha. Cacao is known to boost heart health, in addition to regulating blood pressure, providing fiber and magnesium, and even enhancing overall mood.
