Overcoming Your Fears

By Randi Morse

Everybody fears something. Fear is a natural emotion and, in small doses, is healthy. Fear is your body's way of keeping you safe. However, there are times when fear is a bad thing. If you become so frightened of something but it affects your life, you may want to work on overcoming your fears.

Define the Fear

You can't conquer something if you can't define it. The first step to overcoming a fear is to name the fear. For example, if you are afraid of flying, what are you afraid of? Are you afraid of heights, are you afraid of the plane crashing? Figure out exactly what it is you are afraid of.

Understand the Fear

Once you have defined the fear you need to understand it. When does the fear happen? What triggers it? How do you feel when it happens? The more you understand your fear, the easier it is to push fear aside and replace it with facts.

Fact Find the Fear

If you are scared of flying, educate yourself about the facts. How often do planes actually crash? Statistically, how safe are you when you are flying in a plane? You can't overcome a fear unless you are able to understand the facts behind the fear. A person scared of the dark isn't scared of the blackness, they are scared of what they can't see. If your mind understands there's nothing to be afraid of, you will be in a much better place to overcome your fear.

Attack the Fear

I used to have a serious fear of needles. I realized I didn't want to be scared of needles so I devised a plan to help me get over my fear. I first started volunteering to donate blood every time I was able to. I then went and got a tattoo. By exposing myself to needles slowly, but regularly, I was able to overcome my fear. Create a plan that will help you to overcome your fear.

Get Help With the Fear

Sometimes things are just too big for us to handle on our own, and that's okay. If you are struggling with overcoming your fear you may want to seek out some help. Help can be as simple as speaking with friends and family or as intricate as seeking out a counselor or therapist to help you conquer your fear.

Being afraid is completely natural, but if you are looking to conquer your fears, approach them with knowledge and with the understanding that it is going to take time to truly overcome the fears that you have, but that it is definitely possible.
