Chiropractic for Side Sleepers
By Amy Silva
Everyone has a favorite position to sleep in and there are benefits and risks associated with each sleep position. It's a matter of preference as to which position is best but if your favorite is causing you discomfort, there are things you can do to get back to sleeping like a baby.
Benefits of Sleeping on Your Side
Sleeping on your side may help certain health conditions so you can get a better night's rest. It can help those with sleep apnea by making breathing easier, as well as reduce snoring in general. Sleeping on the side may reduce or even eliminate lower back pain in the average person and it's possible it could help pain in those suffering from certain chronic conditions. It could also ease digestive symptoms if you sleep on your left side versus your right.
Risks of Sleeping on Your Side
Those who suffer from heartburn or are pregnant may find that sleeping on their right side can make symptoms worse or cause pain. Changing sides and facing the left could help alleviate symptoms and discomfort. One thing to keep in mind is it's possible that sleeping on your side could cause skin issues and wrinkles as time goes on if you typically sleep on your side, and it could make existing issues worse.
Tips for Making Your Side Comfortable
If you find that sleeping on your side causes discomfort or pain in your back, neck or shoulders, consider trying these tips:
- Support - If your mattress is the culprit, consider replacing it. Be sure you're using a pillow that is made for side sleeping, as one that is too flat could cause neck pain.
- Positions - If your hips ache after sleeping on your side, place a pillow between your legs while you sleep. Try changing the position of your limbs such as keeping them bent or straight to see if it helps.
- Chiropractic - See a chiropractor for an assessment.
