Relieving Back Pain Due to Daily Chores
By Paul Rothbart
Unless you are independently wealthy, you have a number of chores that must be performed daily. Making a living is pretty important, so that's at least five days. Household cleaning tasks are daily. If you have children, they need care. Add in things like yard work, grocery and other shopping and you have quite a number of chores. Let's look at what these tasks may involve. Lots of lifting, some of it heavy, bending, stretching, climbing stairs. Perhaps sitting or standing for long periods of time, maybe hunched over a computer screen. All of this can take a toll on your back and cause pain. There are several things you can do to minimize the pain while performing the tasks.
Pain From Lifting
Heavy lifting puts a strain on the back. The key here is to avoid lifting if possible and to do it properly when it's necessary. Be mindful of the team lift. Often heavy boxes will be labeled that they require more than one person to lift. Get help when you need it. Make use of hand trucks or other equipment that may be available. When you do lift, keep your back straight and use your legs to support the load. Never twist or bend when carrying a heavy object and keep it close to your body. If you lift for a living, it's a good idea to wear a back brace. Always stretch and warm up a bit before attempting a heavy lift.
Pain From Remaining in One Position
Sitting at a desk all day can lock the back into one position and cause pain. Having your neck at the same angle while you look at an electronic screen can have the same effect. Spending long hours standing can cause just as much pain. It's important to take frequent breaks. If you are sitting, go ahead and stand up, stretch, and move around. If you stand, then take a seat for a few minutes. It's also important to sit and stand with good posture, back straight, shoulders back, and head up.
See a Chiropractor
Although there is much you can do on your own to minimize back pain, getting the care of a professional will be extremely helpful. Regular chiropractic visits can keep your spine healthy and pain-free. A good chiropractor will inspect your spine and joints and make any necessary adjustments. A healthy back will hurt less and allow you to keep getting those tasks done.
