How to Stop Procrastinating

By Sara Butler

You know the old saying, “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after”? You do if you’re a procrastinator! A lot of people have procrastination down to a fine art. Are you one of those people? It may seem like you do your best work under the gun, but the truth is that procrastination is a stressful way to go about life. Here are a few ways you might be able to break your procrastination habit.

Just Do It

The folks over at Nike are certainly not procrastinators, and their advice is sound. If you are wondering if you should go ahead and just get something out of the way then you should probably just go ahead and do it. If you’ve got no real reason to put off doing it, then don’t.

Your To-Do List

If you’re a person a procrastinator who keeps a to-do list, then your to-do list probably stays a mile long. This isn’t a good thing because it mires you down and makes things seem like they’re never going to get done. Not to mention that things tend to sink further and further into the list that eventually become invisible to you.

To fix this problem, start your to-do list over every week. Don’t worry about the things you didn’t do, just try to make a realistic list of the things you think you can get done in the coming week.

Get Plenty of Exercise

You didn’t think you could get away from exercise here, did you? No way! It’s a proven fact that regular exercise makes you feel energized, so it makes sense that regular exercise will help to give you the motivation to get things done.

Don’t forget to get plenty of sleep, too. Nothing will make you procrastinate more than feeling tired and grumpy.

Simplify

You don’t need to go and join an Amish community or anything, but you should take a look at the priorities in your life and decide which things actually matter to you and which are not all that important. Get rid of the baggage and clutter. If you have too much on your plate it will only cause you to procrastinate further.

What Are You Doing Now?

Maybe you’re procrastinating by reading this article about procrastination. It’s like a scene from the movie Inception! But seriously, stop reading this and go out and do something right now that you’ve been putting off. Seriously. GO!
