Simple Ways to Put Stress in Its Place

By Sandy Schroeder

If you are like me, stress tends to take over and build if I let it. When one problem mushrooms into three others, I know I have to dial everything back to regain control. Even the simplest issue can seem to be too much when you are stressed out. Monitor your stress and do something about it. Here are some tips that might help from Harvard Health.

Cut back on alcohol, caffeine and nicotine -  Substitute waters, herbal teas and natural fruit juices. At the same time skip sugary treats and enjoy fresh whole fruits or salads loaded with veggies.

Walk off some of the stress - Get outside for fresh air and long walks and add some stretching or strength exercises. Go biking or hiking and bring the whole family along.

Make sleep a welcome retreat - Create a sublime setting with plants, air filters to screen out noise, and blackout drapes. Ditch the electronics and develop a calming sleep ritual with warm baths and soft music.

Find the right relaxation formula - Brief morning and evening meditations, simple breathing exercises during the day and a moving meditation such as tai chi may help you find a better place.

Talk it through with a friend - Sometimes stress can cloud your judgment and you just need to sit and talk about it with a trusted friend or family member. Often others have been where you are and can empathize with you.

Start a journal - When stress just keeps building, it sometimes helps to pick a regular time every day and write it all down. Do this for a week or two and then review your notes. If you see no progress, you may want to see a therapist to get everything sorted out.

Face up to the issues - Take control and really look at what you need to do. Family, work, finances or health worries call for a lists of solutions and resources to get real answers. Once you are moving forward you will feel a lot better.

Get down to basics - If you are simply overloaded, it may be time to say no to additional projects, or rearrange your schedule and delegate some of the work. When we get maxed out everything looms larger. Make a list of what you have to do and prioritize everything.

Take time out if you need it - After looking at what is needed, talking with friends, and delegating a few tasks, you may feel a lot better. Or you may need to take some time off to rest and regroup. If you need it, make the time and surprise yourself as life begins to look better.

The more skillfully you handle your stress the easier it will be to dial it back and move on.
