Exercise Can be Free

By Donna Stark

More than 15. Yep, within a two-mile radius of my home, there are more than 15 gyms, boot camps, and fitness centers … I just counted them, and it’s hard to believe. Unfortunately, that’s the norm where I live, and although it obviously seems like there is a market for all of them, I often wonder if it is sending the wrong message. It seems like unless exercise is both expensive and hard-core, you aren’t really getting a good workout in. But that’s the furthest thing from the truth.

Exercise Doesn’t Have to Cost a Small Fortune

For some people, the results that they get and the knowledge they gain is worth every last penny they spend on a gym membership or a personal trainer. There is tremendous value if that is something that you need to do to get healthy. But studies are showing that it really doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you do to achieve amazing health benefits.

Physical Activity Can be Free

The notion that you have to spend money to get a good workout in is wrong. Physical activity is physical activity, and it doesn’t only count if you are wearing a perfectly matched outfit that cost an entire paycheck. Whether you are sweating in a gym, cleaning your house, or walking to work, all forms of exercise have been shown to improve a person’s overall health. Here are some other suggestions for physical activity that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

  • Schedule walking meetings at work
  • Using public transportation? Get off a stop early
  • Walk on your lunch hour
  • Walk to stores if they are close enough
  • Add some steps by choosing the farthest parking spot
  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Clean your house
  • Do your own yard work
  • Play with your children

We now spend more time glued to our chairs, even as we realize that rates of chronic disease and obesity are rising. We are a nation that is more sedentary than ever before. We drive more, we sit at our jobs, and we even shop from our sofas. It’s imperative that we fight this sedentary lifestyle and find the time to add physical activity into our lives.

One of the most satisfying ways to add exercise into your days is to do it with your loved ones. Schedule some family workouts, after-dinner walks, or pickup games into your week. Or, if you are like the millions of families that have children involved in sports, use that time wisely and get a workout of your own in by walking or jogging around the fields where they practice.

The key idea here is that exercise doesn’t have to become a financial burden to you or your family. Any type of physical activity is great and it’s even better if you have a loved one to join you.
