Healthy Bedrooms for a Healthy Body
By Donna Stark
Maintaining a safe and healthy home requires more than just a deep clean every other week. It requires some extra attention in your bedroom every new year or so because, believe it or not, what you are sleeping on could be causing some of those annoying health issues you have been dealing with. If you are suffering from allergies, constantly getting sick, or struggling with chronic pain, keep reading. Below are some tips on how to make your bedroom healthier.
Mattresses
A quality mattress is essential if you want to reduce your risk of chronic pain and give your body the proper amount of rest it deserves. If yours is old, bumpy, and out of shape, it can cause uneven pressure and strain on the body which can easily lead to back and neck pain. And over time, it can collect a variety of allergens. When it is time for a new mattress, do your research, try them out in the store, and make sure you are purchasing one with excellent support. And although a mattress only needs to be replaced every eight years or so, don't forget to rotate it on a yearly basis (twice a year if you share a bed with someone).
Pillows
Another thing you use every night that tends to break down, become lumpy, and lose its support is your pillow. Inadequate pillow support can cause chronic neck pain, stiffness, and daily headaches. It can also exacerbate snoring and collect allergens and bacteria if there are any holes or deep creases. You should replace your pillow every year, and when you do, be sure to choose one that is hypoallergenic and very supportive.
Bedding
You don't need to buy new bedding every year, but it should be replaced as soon as you see significant signs of wear, typically after several years. If your bedding is in bad shape, it can become home to bacteria, dust mites, and pet dander which will only exacerbate allergies, asthma, and illnesses. It is important to keep your bedding clean, so as a general rule, wash your sheets every one to two weeks.
Healthy Bedrooms for a Healthy Body
In addition to everything on your bed, don't forget to clean everything around your bed too. Vacuum your carpets, dust your furniture, and consider investing in an air purifier. Maintaining a healthy and hygienic bedroom is exactly what your body needs to stay well throughout the entire year!
