Maternity & Chiropractic Care
The prevalence of uncomfortableness or even greater pains during pregnancy, is a complaint from women that is probably as old as the human species itself. In fact, these complaints are so universal that they have come to be accepted as part of the normal process of pregnancy. But for Dr. Amanda Kugel, a chiropractor and new mother based in Tumwater, WA, this sort of complacency isn’t necessary.
Especially troubling to Kugel is the prevalence that untested medications are given to newly pregnant women for the treatment of pain, without consideration of how they might effect the unborn child. It was this that inspired her to apply her chiropractic knowledge to addressing the pains and discomforts the challenge pregnant women. By doing so she seeks to create a safe and effective alternative to pharmacological pain treatment for pregnancy.
Kugel’s hypothesis is that a pregnant woman’s body undergoes huge hormonal changes and that these changes are handled through the instinctive intelligence of the human nervous system. By using chiropractic care to remove any interference in communication between the nervous system and the rest of body’s parts, in the form of stiff joints and tight muscles, Kugel aims to establish more order and thus health to the woman’s body and the baby she carries.
Kugel’s education includes special training at the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association program which teaches courses in administering prenatal adjustments to pregnant mothers. Mild yet effective treatments are designed for each stage of pregnancy. This training is in combination with the Webster Technique, an approach that focuses on the sacrum as the foundation of the body, which is an extremely important body part in deciding the health during and after pregnancy.
The host of painful symptoms that arise for pregnant women often bring them into chiropractic clinics seeking relief. Kugel is no stranger to treating mother’s to be who complain of headaches, mid and low back pain, rib pain, and sciatica. Many of these symptoms are induced by the sudden weight gains that pregnancy brings on. A lower center of gravity begins developing on the skeleton and this pushes a frontward and downward pressure on joints in the back and hips, or where the spine joins the pelvis.
Being a mother herself, Kugel is especially aware of how these problems affect the body making her an expert in chiropractic care during pregnancy. Kugel is a great advocate of chiropractic adjustment for mother’s both before and after birth as it generally reduces stress, increases comfort during delivery, and corrects the posture after the baby has been born.
