What Every Active Kid Needs at Home
By Brandi Goodman
Younger students get the opportunity for recess and gym when they're at school. Older students have gym and sports. This means they receive the recommended amount of physical activity. When students are home, they should not be sitting down all day. They need the same amount of physical activity incorporated into their daily routines. Every active kid needs certain things at home in order for them to get the exercise they require.
Some Wheels
Kids can't drive, but they can ride. The types of "vehicles" intended for children provide a great way for them to get exercise. Bikes, roller blades, scooters, and other things with wheels all allow your kids to get outside and go fast. It's fun and exciting for them while also providing an ideal leg workout. They'll be burning calories and getting their hearts racing.
Some Chalk
Getting down on the ground and coloring with chalk does provide a little exercise. To make chalk work more to your child's benefit, however, have him or her use it to draw a hopscotch board or create another activity. It's an easy and affordable way to keep kids active.
A Ball
A ball can provide various forms of uses. You may want one or several if you're hoping to keep your kids active in different ways. A basketball can be bounced and thrown. A baseball can be hit and caught. A kickball is great for kicking around the yard. Even a small bouncy ball can get a lot of use and will have kids exercising as they run to catch it.
Playground Equipment
Some form of playground equipment can go a long way toward keeping your kids busy. If you have the space, add what you can to your yard. A swing-set is a great option for all ages. Younger kids may enjoy a slide or small jungle gym. A trampoline is also effective.
A Fitness Game
Kids can't spend all their time outside. There's going to be rainy days, cold days, and days that they just don't feel like getting up and going out. Gaming systems are popular in many households because they provide hours of entertainment. Purchase a fitness game for whatever system you have and make sure your kids are using it regularly. The Wii, for example, has a Wii Fit option. You can use the balance board to perform exercises or stand on it and perform certain moves as your Mii character makes it through an activity on screen. PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect have similar offerings.
Give your kids plenty of opportunity for physical activity so they can get the exercise they need. It will improve both their physical and mental well-being. Get outside with your kids when you can for your own benefit as well.
