How to Have a Pain-Free Winter
By Brandi Goodman
The winter season can bring with it some hardships. Many of these cold-weather struggles can lead to pain. Do what you can to have a pain-free winter so you can enjoy the season more and be stuck in bed less.
Dress for the Weather
It's important to dress for the weather if you're going to be outside. Layers are important so you can take away something should you feel overheated, or put it back on when you get too cold. What do clothes have to do with pain? Well, failure to wear the right things when you're outside in the cold can lead to a shivering body and inflamed joints. You'll feel achy and sore quickly if you aren't bundled up.
Avoid Icy Areas
Walking on ice can lead to falls. If you will be outside in icy conditions, make sure you're wearing some sturdy boots with traction. Salt your driveways and steps and hold onto rails when walking if they're available. Just one fall can be all it takes to leave you debilitated.
Follow Shoveling Safety Tips
If you have to shovel, make sure you're doing so with safety tips in mind. Overloading your shovel with too much snow can add extra weight that hurts your arms or back. Never twist your body, either. Scoop up your snow and walk over to the yard to deposit it. Don't try to toss it over and end up hurting your back or shoulder. You should also take breaks often. Doing too much at once, especially in the cold, can spell trouble for your body.
Be Smart and Safe Indoors, Too
Winter safety doesn't only involve the outdoors. You need to be sure you're following safety tips indoors as well. This means keeping heaters away from curtains and rugs. Use caution when you light your fireplace. Never leave candles unattended and use battery-operated flashlights instead when possible. You don't want to experience the heat and accompanied pain of a fire out of control.
A pain-free winter is possible. You just need to keep some precautions in mind and ensure you're doing what you can to avoid discomfort.
