Sitting It Out May Cause Back Pain

By Tom Herrin

Most of the time, when people think of back pain, they think of accidents.  Many such injuries are the result of accidents in automobiles, workplaces, or homes.  The injuries may be debilitating and result in considerable pain and loss of productive time.  There can be problems from much simpler things. Simply sitting can actually have an effect on the back as well.  The real culprit is usually poor posture. The long hours some people spend sitting slumped over or sunk down can deal out its share of damage on the spine.

The Sitting Connection

When people sit for extended periods of time day after day, they may experience a deterioration of some of the muscles and soft tissue that protect the spine.  Their job is to maintain correct position. When these muscles suffer from strain from something such as poor posture, they become weakened. This interferes with their ability to hold the spine properly.  A joint dysfunction can occur in which pressure is placed on a nerve. This causes pain. With nothing to correct this, the pain may become nagging and bothersome. As the problem persists, the pain may intensify to the extent that it becomes impossible for the injured person to find any degree of comfort or relief.

Chiropractors Provide Natural Relief

When people go to a chiropractor, they will usually receive an adjustment.  With this, the spine is gently manipulated so that the injured joint is restored to its proper position.  This relieves the pressure from the nerve and the pain from the individual. Since this is done without painkillers, there is no risk of addiction or side effects.  Chiropractors will often suggest exercises that can help improve muscles that support the injured joint and/or ways to improve posture. This can lead to faster healing.  People can usually return to their normal routines much sooner.
