How to Start Eating Healthier

By Sara Butler

A question that tends to be on a lot of people’s minds is what they can do to be healthier; yet, that normally involves a change of diet. But diet trends come and go. How do you know what to do that will help you truly achieve a healthy diet and a healthier lifestyle? Here are a few tips to help start you on the path to better health through what you eat.

Eat Often

Many people grew up with the notion that three meals a day is the healthiest thing to do, but that may not be true. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may help you to become more satisfied throughout the day and keep you from being so hungry that you overeat at meals. This doesn’t mean you need to eat six meals a day. What it does mean is that you should try to focus on eating three main meals per day with two snacks sprinkled in between.

Pair Foods Well

Carbohydrates are not your enemy. In fact, your body needs them to work at its very best because carbohydrates help to supply energy. Many foods that are healthy for you are considered carbohydrates anyway, such as some vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Don’t shy away from these foods! Embrace them and learn what to pair them with to get all the benefits you need!

Opt for complex carbohydrates when you can and pair them with protein such as nut butter or cheese. That will help your body to use them more efficiently and keep you satisfied for longer!

Fat is Your Friend

Fat is not as bad as you may have been led to believe. In fact, some fat is really beneficial to your body, such as monounsaturated fats. When you cut back on fat, you should aim for saturated fats that you find in foods such as bacon. The fats you find in foods such avocados or extra virgin olive oil are very good for you and shouldn’t be skipped over.

Fats also play a big role in helping you to feel satisfied. That means you may not be as tempted to overeat when you do eat or snack between meals.

It's not as difficult as you may think to start eating healthier! These tips will help to start you off right and make you healthier!
