Ideas for an Active Vacation

By Sara Butler

When most people think of a vacation, they think of relaxation and a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While that may be great sometime when you’re thinking about your vacation plans this year, why not choose an active vacation! Active vacations can be done almost anywhere; it simply involves centering your vacation on being active. Here are a few active ideas for your family to consider this year!

Walking

When you travel somewhere, a walking tour is one of the best ways to explore. You can exercise at a comfortable pace but still take in the sounds and sights of where you’re traveling. This is a great way to mingle with the locals, learn about the culture, and try new restaurants off the beaten path. You can visit vineyards, go on historical tours, or even participate in a cooking demonstration. The important thing is that you’re incorporating movement into your day and working on your fitness while you’re having fun. Plus, you get a glimpse into what it’s like to be a local and are met with some really great photo opportunities!

Climb a Mountain

If nothing else, boosting your adrenaline levels by taking on a mountain makes a great story when you get back home. There are many travel companies that specialize in climbing, so you don’t have to be an expert to give it a go. You can easily discover this kind of beauty within the United States or venture to other places in the world to channel your inner explorer. Just make sure you have the stamina to finish.

Go on a River Adventure

Whitewater rafting is an activity you can probably get the whole family on board with! You can easily find a whitewater rafting expedition for your experience level. It’s an activity that combines heart-pumping action with beautiful scenery and is probably going to be an experience you’ll never forget.

If rafting isn’t for you, then consider kayaking. You can rent one or two person kayaks and explore river country on your own.

Take a Hike

The United States is full of National Parks with great hiking trails. Take your family on an adventure to take in the natural beauty and wildlife of Yosemite or Yellowstone, for example. Check out the Giant Sequoias or scramble up to the top of Sentinel Dome. It’ll be a bonding experience that will create memories for everyone. Plus, it keeps you active!

There are so many places to explore in the world. Try it on foot!
