Chiro in Space: How Zero Gravity Affects Joints

By Kate Gardner

If given the chance, would you go to the moon? What about Mars? Commercial space travel is still in its early stages but in the near future, it may be possible for any of us to rocket into space (assuming we can afford it). Before you slip on your moon boots, it's probably a good idea to know what health risks are associated with space travel. A recent study shows one problem astronauts may face is damage to their joints.

Your Joints in Space

According to Space.com, research carried out in mice aboard an unmanned spacecraft aimed to see if time in space could lead to changes in the musculoskeletal system. This system -- made up of muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage -- is under a lot of pressure here on Earth. The forces of gravity combined with walking, running, and other movement places a lot of force on our joints. Researchers found that in the almost-zero gravity of space, joints were under far less pressure and began to break down. The study's authors noted that, given enough time in space, major damage may be done to joints.

Your Joints on Earth

Of course, most of us have our feet firmly planted on Earth. As a result, our joints are under a lot of pressure. While this means they won't degrade as they would in space, we can suffer injuries and subluxations. Acute or chronic, the pain of joint injuries can sideline us and keep us from enjoying life. When that happens, it's important to know your options to get you up and moving again.

Chiropractic Care

Whether you've been in space or here on Earth, chiropractic care can be a great way to take care of your joints. When we experience subluxations it means our joints are not properly aligned or are in a restricted state. Subluxations can cause joint pain and compressed nerves. Chiropractic care can help bring your joints back into alignment or freed from restriction, thereby reducing pain, discomfort, and swelling as well as improving flexibility.
