How to Ease Into a Workout Routine
By Genevieve Cunningham
Everyone needs to exercise. It’s good for the body and mind. It helps us maintain a healthy weight and keeps body systems functioning well. But if you aren’t already in the habit of working out, creating the habit can be tough. It takes some self-discipline and persistence. But luckily it doesn’t always have to be so hard. If you’re interested in creating and keeping a workout routine, take a look at these tips to get you started.
Don’t Go For Broke
If you start out with too much too fast, you’re going to get sore and tired and rundown. And then you’re going to give up! If you’re trying to start a habit, you don’t have to start with an hour a day six days a week. How about 20 minutes three times per week? It’s also helpful to work out gently instead of trying to make up for lost time. Start with something low-impact and work toward that heavy HIIT workout. This gets your body ready, and prevents you from overdoing it.
Choose Something You Like
If you’re going to create a habit that you’ll actually stick with, you’re going to need to choose something enjoyable. If you hate running, don’t try to make it your habit. Try aerobics or Zumba or yoga. Choose an activity that you can look forward to. Your workout routine doesn’t have to look like anything specific … except what you want it to look like. Choose something specifically for you, and you’re more likely to stick with it.
Be Gentle on Yourself
It’s going to take time to build up. It’s going to take time to feel confident in the gym. Be gentle on yourself. It’s OK to take it easy. It’s OK if you miss a day. It’s OK to rest. Do what you need to in order to be successful, and that includes being easy on yourself. As you get better, you can expect more and more from yourself. But in the beginning, forgive yourself for mistakes and keep moving forward.
A workout routine is definitely important. It helps us stay strong, balanced, and flexible. Unfortunately, it’s one of the first things that we give up in our adult lives. Use these tips to reclaim a solid workout routine, and watch your health improve like never before.
