Why Honesty Is Key for the Best Chiropractic Results

By Brandi Goodman

Chiropractic care can benefit your mind and body. That is, as long as you're honest with your chiropractor. Your chiropractor will ask you questions regarding your medical history. You'll be asked for details about where the pain is located and how it may have started. Your daily habits are part of the details your chiropractor will want to know. Honesty is key if you want to get the best results.

Why Honesty Matters

Say you lie about your habits. You feel embarrassed admitting that you slouch on the couch for hours on end. You don't want to admit you tend to eat more junk food than healthy options that could help your joint and overall health. These lies could impede your results. Your doctor of chiropractic doesn't get the full picture regarding your lifestyle and therefore offers inaccurate advice. You need to be honest so that your chiropractor has all the information necessary. It will help him or her determine the best course of action for your specific needs.

Different Symptoms Require Different Approaches

If you aren't honest about your symptoms then you won't get the right approach. If you've had an injury that has caused you discomfort, then more gentle manipulation may need to be utilized. Perhaps it's due to your poor posture and bad habits that you're experiencing. You may need multiple visits in order to correct the damage done. Your chiropractor cannot determine the correct approach until you're fully honest about the reason for your visit.

Don't Worry - They've Heard It All

You may feel nervous or embarrassed to tell the truth, which inhibits you from being fully honest. You may skirt around the issue and reveal only a partial truth in order to save yourself some of the embarrassment. Don't worry so much. Your chiropractor has most likely heard it all. They understand people aren't perfect. They sometimes exhibit bad habits. They slouch in front of the TV. They do things they shouldn't. Your doctor isn't there to shame or judge you -- only provide the care you need. All that will come of you sharing the full story is you getting the care you require to ease your pain, so go ahead and be honest.

Always be honest with your chiropractor and any other doctor you see. It's important to provide accurate information so the people providing your care can offer the correct treatment plan. A small fib may seem like no big deal but it can result in major consequences if the wrong course of action gets taken because of it.
