Don't Buy a Mattress Without a Chiropractor's Advice
By Brandi Goodman
A new mattress is a luxury for many, yet it's also a necessity. Too many people go far too long without making a replacement. You might have been experiencing back pain, trouble sleeping, and restless nights before making the switch because of the sunken spots, uneven bed, and worn out mattress you had to live with for years. Before making this type of purchase, you should really seek a chiropractor's advice so you can get the most comfortable option for you.
Find Your Firmness
Not every person will require the same level of firmness in a mattress. You need to be sure your bed offers the perfect amount of stiffness and comfort for you. Someone who sleeps on their stomach, for example, needs a sturdy mattress that maintains its shape and helps keep their spine aligned better. A bed that's too soft can cause you to sink in more as you sleep and put your spine out of alignment.
Try It Out
Just because you bought the bed already doesn't mean you have to keep it. Try it out for a while and see how your body really feels after a few weeks with it. If you're getting plenty of sleep and wake feeling well-rested, it's probably a good fit to keep. If you're still struggling to fall asleep at night and wake up with aches, then it needs to be sent back.
Don't Forget the Box Spring
Many mattresses are just what's on top. A box spring sits underneath to add to the level of comfort and raise the bed off the floor. Not everyone thinks to replace this component. Don't make this mistake. The box spring needs replacing just like the mattress does. You can also ditch the box spring and find a bed that doesn't require this part so it's one less thing to spend money on.
Get a Hypoallergenic Version
Lots of people have more allergies than they realize. Some mattresses are made with allergenic components that can be harmful to your health. Make sure to check the label for something you're known to have a problem with, or just get a hypoallergenic version altogether. It will save you from a bad night's sleep as you toss and turn through the night and suffer from respiratory distress.
