A Fall Hike Sans Back Pain

By Virginia Laird

With the weather finally holding temperatures that are pleasant enough to begin spending time outdoors, it is no wonder that families begin to plan weekend adventures and evening hikes. It is not only the cooler weather beaconing families to get outside, the beauty of fall is surely something for all to enjoy. As the leaves turn from green to their variety of fall colors, nature becomes a beautiful piece of art for all to partake. It is during this time of year that hiking is at its peak. While hiking can bring a sense of adventure and plenty of fun, chiropractors encourage those hiking to pay particular care to their back. Hiking, or exercise of any sort, can be the culprit of a great deal of back pain. A few chiropractic tips to adhere to when heading out on your hiking excursion include:

  • Dress appropriately
  • Pack light
  • Take breaks along your path

Dress Appropriately

Wearing the right clothing is helpful when trying to keep back pain at bay as you enjoy the great outdoors. Chiropractors say that you should wear clothing that allows you to move without restriction. It is also imperative that you wear a good pair of comfy shoes, preferably tennis shoes that offer support. Before you head out to your favorite hiking trail, make sure you are dressed appropriately.

Pack Light

Although there will be plenty to pack as you hike, it is necessary that you keep it light. Chiropractors insist that packing only the items you truly need can help keep your load light, and prevent tugging at your spine, which often leads to restriction and pain. It is also advised that you pack your gear in a lightweight backpack to allow the back to evenly carry the load.

Take Breaks Along Your Path

Chiropractors encourage those hitting the hiking trail to take breaks along the way. Finding time to get off of your feet and stretching can help you prevent back pain. It is advised that you take a break at least once each hour. Each break should last for at least 15 minutes.  While you are enjoying time off your feet, make sure to hydrate.
