Do Standing Desks Help Your Health?

By Randi Morse

One of the great things about the advancement of technology is when companies create products that actually help enrich our lives. We don't often talk about how office technology can enrich our lives, but there are a number of products that have been created which help keep people who work in offices healthier. One such product is the standing desk. Standing desks free you from being chained to your chair while still allowing you to work at your computer. Does a standing desk really help that much?

Caloric Benefits

Researchers decided to see if people we're able to benefit from burning more calories simply by standing up at their desks. The Journal of Physical Activity and Health outfitted 74 healthy people where the gear that measured the amount of oxygen they used in order to determine how many calories they burned while doing everyday tasks. They discovered that the subjects who were sitting burned off around 80 calories an hour, which is about the same amount you would consumed sitting on the couch watching television. The subjects who used standing desks burned about 88 calories an hour.

That is not a huge difference. In fact, researchers discovered that the subjects who used their half-hour lunch break to walk burned around 110 calories, once again proving that getting active is vitally important for your health.

Other Benefits

While standing at your desk may not help you lose weight, it can help your body in a dramatic way.
