Wrist Problems and Your Chiropractor
By Randi Morse
Just like many people, I work with my hands all day. I'm often at a computer typing for eight to nine hours at a time. I try to take little rests and breaks in-between my work, but it's easy to get so caught up in doing my work that I forget to take time to stretch and move around. This can wreak havoc on your joints, especially your wrists.
Wrist Problems
Do you realize how much you use your wrists? Your wrists are used for so many things, from brushing your hair and teeth to cooking and doing laundry. Much like your spine, your wrists often take on heavy loads. Carrying groceries up a flight of stairs or holding a toddler can put a ton of stress on your wrists. Wrists are often one of the first things injured when you fall. It's natural to put your hands out to try to brace yourself when you fall, but our wrists aren't designed to handle sudden impacts and can be easily injured from traumatic moments.
Common Issues
There are a ton of common problems that are associated with your wrist, including carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that generally occurs due to repetitive motion. It happens when there is an increased pressure on the median nerve, a nerve that passes through the palm side of your wrist. Ganglion cysts are also common for people who do a lot of repetitive motion with their hands and can be fairly painful.
Fixing Wrist Problems
How you fix a wrist issue depends on the specific type of issue that you're dealing with. People dealing with slip and fall issues can often find relief using heat and cold compresses, some may need more complete treatment, such as chiropractic care. Many times conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome can be battled back with chiropractic care. Bringing in a chiropractor at the beginning signs of carpal tunnel syndrome allows the chiropractor to start treatment that can kick-start the healing process, potentially allowing you to avoid having surgery.
