All Bread Is Not Bad for Us
By Tom Herrin
Bread is one of those foods that has long been eaten by most, if not all, groups of people for many years. While it may have been made from all kinds of grains, many of us became accustomed to eating bread made from wheat. It has lots of things that may add to a healthy diet, but once people began to refine the flour made from wheat, much of the health benefit was taken out of it. Early in the twentieth century, breads made from this highly refined flour was attributed to a sudden rise in the incidence of colon cancer. Today there are some products available that offer some great benefits to health.
Whole Wheat Bread Has Become Popular
For those of us who may have decided to shy away from white bread, the simplest option may have been whole wheat bread. This is not to be confused with simply wheat bread which may be marketed in a similar package. Whole wheat bread that is marked as 100 percent whole wheat still retains the vitamins that have been removed by many other processes. This bread has a good amount of fiber as well as plenty of protein. It can be a healthy part of a meal.
Gluten-Free May Not Mean Healthy
In recent years, many individuals have been concerned about gluten in their foods. It seems that sensitivity to it has been rampant, but it may not be as much as publicized. These gluten-free breads may also be free of lots of other things that we need for a healthy diet. Many of these products have had many of their nutrients removed in the process of making the bread. We should remember that one of the main things we need in our foods is nutrition. If we are really health conscious, we don't want to waste calories on foods that don't do anything to make us any healthier.
Buy Bread That Tastes Good
There is not much incentive to purchase food that doesn't taste good. Who wants that? There are lots of breads out there that have great flavor and provide the things we need to be as healthy as possible. Reading those labels is always a good practice. If we buy something that just doesn't taste good to us, there is no reason to stay with it. Move on and try something else. We can find plenty to choose from.
