Prepare for Inconvenience in Your Life
By Tom Herrin
Most people have heard a lot about what they need to do to get themselves better prepared. With many of the natural disasters that have made headlines in the last few years, many people have paid more attention to things they can do to plan better. It does not always require the purchase of some kind of expensive supplies. It is very likely that they already have something around that they can use to make up part of a good preparedness plan. So many people have had the unfortunate experience of needing a walking aid that they still have something useful on hand.
Walking Aids Are Not All Alike
Just about everyone has probably seen some kind of walking aid. Most have likely taken the opportunity to try to use one. Crutches are pretty common. They are normally used when people want to keep most of their weight off of an injured part. Crutches are good for this while still allowing a person the freedom to move around.
A cane is pretty versatile in that it is relatively lightweight and can be easily stored or carried. It is often used by those who have limited problems with balance. It may also be used by those who are recovering from an injury and want to begin placing more weight on the part.
A walker is pretty substantial. It now comes in many different types and styles. The fact that it has four points in contact with the ground helps. People can use one without much worry about having to balance it.
Crutches Can Provide Freedom
People who need to use crutches usually have an injury that necessitates keeping most of their weight off of the injury. Making certain that they are a good fit is important. The top of the crutch should be one to two inches below the armpit. The hand grips should be at about the level of the top of the hip. This can help to prevent bruising and soreness. It can also help people to lift themselves somewhat as they move around.
Planning Ahead Is the Key
No matter what kind of issue we may have, anticipating the possibility of it occurring can be a big step in preparedness. If you have some kind of walking aid, it is a good idea for everyone in the home to learn to use it properly. This can help them in the event that they need it. Having to learn how to use it once they have an injury can be frustrating. Another thing that can help is to do a safety check of the home. This is a time in which we can identify and remove anything that is a potential hazard as far as causing trips or slips.
