5 Healthy Meal Ideas for the Campground
By Brandi Goodman
Camping is a favorite summer activity for many. It can be hard to decide what to bring along to eat, though. Too many people opt for s'mores, hot dogs, and other easy-to-cook options. These choices, especially if consumed for an entire weekend or longer, are not ideal for your well-being. Healthy meal ideas need to be considered for the campground.
Eggs
Just because you only have a fire to cook over doesn't mean you can't make eggs. Bring along a cast iron pan and an over-the-fire portable grill and you can cook anything you'd normally make on your stove top. Eggs should hold up fine inside a cooler. You can put them inside Ziploc bags if it makes you feel better.
Steak, Potatoes, and Veggies
With your portable grill and cast iron, you can make up some steak, potatoes, and veggies as well. Store the food in tight containers in your cooler and it should hold up well for a few days. Bring along some foil and you can make packs of everything cut up together with a little seasoning. It's a tasty, filling, and nutritious meal option that's easy to make over the fire.
Shish Kebabs
Shish kebabs are a common camping food as it is. Get some skewers and place them over your portable grill. You can make kebabs anyway you choose. A typical option involves chicken and a variety of veggies. You can use any meat you want though. Fruit can also be skewered and grilled like this, and can make a sweet addition to your meal. Pineapple, for example, is a good choice.
Grilled Whole Wheat Sandwiches
Many people bring along a camp cooker, referred to by some as a hobo pie maker. This device works well for grilling sandwiches. Make sure you bring along some whole wheat bread and healthy fixings for a nutritious sandwich option.
Baked Apples
Apples provide lots of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Not everyone enjoys just eating an apple plain though. Make it dessert-worthy by cutting the fruit into slices, putting them in foil, and covering with cinnamon and a bit of brown sugar. Fold the foil over and bake them over your fire for a tasty dessert that's packed with nutrients. It's far more beneficial and less sugar than a s'more.
Healthy meals at the campground can make your trip even more enjoyable. You need nutrition to fuel your body and keep yourself energized. All the typical unhealthy options you may be used to bringing will only slow you down.
