Don't Love Cardio? Learn How To!

By Sara Butler

Some people love a challenging cardiovascular workout. Yet some people would rather have a root canal performed. If you don't love cardio, you're not alone. Some people simply don't enjoy that type of exercise.

Still, there are reasons to try to learn to love it. It's very good for your overall health and wellness. It also helps reduce your risk for several health issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease. That's why if you dread cardio, then you need to work on a few ways to love it. Here are some tips that may help you learn to appreciate the cardio you do a bit more, even if you never fully fall in love with it.

Find Something You Like

It's important to ask yourself if it's really cardio you're opposed to as a form of exercise or just some forms of cardio? If you normally don't get into cardio, then you may have not found the right activity for you.

Cardio includes exercises such as running or walking but also water aerobics, kickboxing, swimming, skating, tennis, dance, cross-country skiing, and more. You can try out different cardio equipment at the gym, too. Try out different types of cardio until you find one that you think may help you to go the distance.

Try Out an Exercise Class

There are a ton of fun exercise classes out there that are cardio-focused but may not feel as if they're cardio at all because they're so fun. Zumba or HIIT may be something you learn to love that you've not tried yet.

Find an Event

Sometimes signing up for an event, such as virtual race series, can help push you to get your cardio in. That way you have a goal to work toward and don't just feel as if you're running in place without actually getting anywhere.

To make it even more fun for yourself, get someone in your family or a friend to sign up for it with you.

Listen to Music

Sometimes music can really help to make a workout fly by. So, if all else fails, create a playlist with your favorite upbeat tunes and whip it out the next time you climb on the elliptical or go for a walk. You may be surprised how much easier some music can make your cardio workout.

You may never love cardio, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it if you find the right activity for you.
