Finding Opportunities for Fitness in the Winter

By Brandi Swieter

The winter months are a drag for many people, with shortened daylight hours and too much stress to mention. The holidays take up a great deal of time, so people often forgo their fitness routines and focus on other tasks instead. Even with winter present and still months to go of coldness, there are plenty of fitness opportunities to find. It’s just a matter of taking a look and making the time to get in some workout time.

Water Aerobics

Plenty of places offer water aerobics classes. Visit a local indoor pool or aquatic center and see what classes they may have available in the near future. Many have beginner courses so those just joining can get acquainted with the process. Even just swimming a few laps at a local pool is a great way to get in some exercise and maintain fitness levels during the winter. It’s a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of daily life during this season.

Hikes

It may get colder in North Carolina, but there isn’t often snow on the ground, at least not in all areas. There are still plenty of warm days that pop up throughout the winter season, with the bright sun shining up above. This is ideal weather for a hike, another activity that provides exercise to those who need it. Go for a hike alone or with friends and enjoy a day outdoors.

Stretching

The cold weather can make the muscles and joints less flexible. To keep them flexible and working well, it is best if people stretch whenever possible. It also improves overall flexibility of the body so fitness activities are easier to accomplish later on down the road. If someone simply finds themselves at home sitting down with stiff legs, they can stand up and stretch their calves. If they’re at the store, they can do calf raises or shoulder raises to stretch out and get some better circulation flow.

Adding fitness to the winter routine can help stop the slump that so many people experience. Whether someone just wants to go for a hike for a day or join a water aerobics class for the foreseeable future, either option provides a way to enjoy some exercise without having to go overboard. All you need is an hour of time to get in some fitness fun and gain some mental clarity.
