3 Healthy Habits for the Aging Individual
By Brandi Goodman
Getting older brings with it many challenges. When you're young, getting older seems glamorous and fun. You'll be able to do what you like, when you like. Though it's true in some aspects, it's entirely false in others. Aging can leave the body sore and fatigued, making it difficult to get anything done. With these three healthy habits in mind, the aging individual has a better chance of maintaining their well-being and living the care-free life they dreamed about as a child.
Stay Physically Active
No matter what age you are, physical activity is key to good health. Your bones and muscles will weaken quickly when you're not using them. You need to be maintaining an exercise routine and keeping your body moving if you have any chance of staying strong and well.
Carefully Consider Your Nutrition
It may be difficult to get a good meal in when you're working a lot. Perhaps you've reached an age where it has become tough to cook. Whatever the circumstance, you still need to carefully consider your nutrition and be sure you're eating healthy foods. If you don't have the time, make some slow-cooker meals that can simmer all day while you're gone. If arthritis in your joints makes it hard to hold your arm up to stir a pot, then at least choose TV dinners that are lean and low in calories. You could also order in a healthy meal or hire someone to do the cooking for you. Your body needs plenty of vitamins, nutrients, and protein to maintain its health.
Stay Connected
Friendships mean a lot when we're younger, but too many people drift away from these friendships as they age. You need to stay connected for your mental well-being. Whether that means visiting with a friend regularly or at least talking on the phone with family, you need others in your life so you can stay connected and have that social outlet. If there's no one in your life, then try volunteering. You can meet some great people in your community.
Healthy habits are necessary for every aging individual. Though each person's routine may look a little different, the same components should be included to ensure a well-rounded care plan to keep yourself looking and feeling great. Age easier with healthier habits in your arsenal.
