Camping: Why It Is Good For You

By Virginia Laird

This time of year I begin to get the itch to go camping. It may be the warm spring air after a long winter which lights my flames to get outside and embrace the fresh air. If you are anything like me, you have already begun to dig out your camping gear, started looking for the perfect location to host the year’s inaugural trip, and marked your calendar for the week or weekend. Were you aware that camping offers a wide variety of health benefits? Research suggests that this outdoor activity is great for mental as well as physical health. A few things which make it healthy include:

  • Camping offers plenty of fresh air
  • Spending time outdoors provides a boost of Vitamin D
  • Campers are less likely to snack
  • Camping is good for your sleep

Camping Offers Plenty of Fresh Air

Whether you are a tent camper or prefer a camping trailer of some sort, you are sure to be exposed to a great deal of fresh air. Health and wellness experts advise that getting outdoors can boost the immune system, clear the mind, and help relieve stress. To gain the advantage of these benefits, it may be time to put camping to the test.

Spending Time Outdoors Provides a Boost of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for the body and can be naturally provided by the sun. While health and wellness experts would suggest limiting the time in direct sunlight, these professionals also admit some sunlight is necessary. Keep in mind as you spend time outside it is imperative to wear sunscreen at all times.

Campers are Less Likely to Snack

Much research suggests that when snacking, it is generally done out of boredom. Research also suggests when on a camping trip, there is little time to be bored. Rather, you may find yourself enjoying your friends and family, fishing, hiking, canoeing and participating in a host of other activities which are available at many camping facilities. Health and wellness professionals suggest being active can help curb the urge to snack absentmindedly. This reduction of snacking can help lead to weight loss.

Camping is Good for Your Sleep

Have you ever heard that camping is good for your sleep? There is truth behind this statement. When you are armed with the appropriate sleeping gear, and after a day of soaking up the sun and being active, you may find it easier to fall asleep and stay that way throughout the night. If you are worried that a sleeping bag may not be enough for you to rest well, consider investing in an air mattress. This can help provide a little more cushion while you enjoy your snooze in the great outdoors.

With all these benefits, there is little doubt why many love to camp. Now is the time to begin preparing for your camping adventure. You just may love it and love the stress-free environment it offers. Happy camping!
