How to Make Your Home a Healthy Haven

By Genevieve Cunningham

The home is a sanctuary. It’s where we unwind at the end of the day, where our families gather, where we feel most secure and happy. But a home should be more than that … it should be a place where health and happiness are abundant. While families and friends and activities can help promote happiness, how do we promote better health in our homes? Take a look at these tips for making your home a healthy haven now and into the future.

Keep Things Dry

One of the biggest enemies to your home is water. Too much water and you have the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. And these pesky problems can harm your health without you even knowing they are there. Make sure that any risky spots -- such as the bathroom and kitchen -- have proper ventilation in order to get the moisture out. You can also have your home inspected and cleaned if you suspect that mold is already an issue.

Dust Regularly

Every home has dust. It’s almost unavoidable. But you can make it a lot better if you make dusting a habit. Some people feel as though dusting is pointless. As soon as you swipe the counter or table, dust settles right on top again. But every time that you dust, you’re removing small particles and germs from your home. Dust in the morning when you wake up and before you go to bed. Though it feels counterproductive, you’re fighting a good fight (and winning more than you know!) when you make dusting a habit.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Clutter in a home brings more negatives than people realize. For starters, it plays tricks on your mind. Clutter in the home makes your mind feel cluttered as well, which can be stressful and damaging to mental health. Clutter also invites dust, bugs, and even small rodents into your home. Getting rid of the clutter lowers the instances of these problems and makes your home healthier.

Keeping a healthy home is important for your overall well-being and for that of your family's. When the home is a mess, you’re more likely to be both physically and mentally unwell. Use these tips to get your house under control and to enjoy coming home to peace, quiet, and better health every day.
