5 Work Habits to Spot and Delete
By Sandy Schroeder
Sometimes we slip into grooves that quickly become habits that keep life going, but never really seem to move things forward.
See if these bad habits posted by Lifehack sound familiar. If they do, it’s time to delete them.
Pausing too long - It’s good to take a deep breath and then look for the best opportunities out there, but sometimes we can pause too long. If you are stuck in a work groove just waiting for a breakthrough, it may be time to make it happen. When we pick our own targets, reach out to others, and explore our skills, we have a much better chance of landing in the right spot. It’s important to really enjoy what you are doing. To make sure that happens, keep looking for the areas that do the most for you.
Hungry for applause – Do you find yourself shaping your work to fit the standards of others? Following good advice is great, but just looking for compliments is not. Following the crowd or responding to pressure from others can be a mistake. Whenever you find yourself shaping your work to fit the aims of others, you need to take a long look at what those aims really are. It’s much wiser to take the time to develop solid work standards supported by your best efforts. Then the praise will just show up automatically.
Call your own shots – If you are constantly striving for the latest and the greatest, you may find yourself working feverishly for things you really don’t need or want. Today’s culture makes it easy to want more until we get it and take a closer look. Work hard at something that you enjoy, and then use your money to choose what you really want.
Just blending in – In the same way we need to define the material possessions that suit us, we also have to define who we really are. Friends, family and co-workers all have their own projects and dreams. Learn from them, but make sure the dreams you pursue are yours. Spend time looking around to sample many slices of life. Keep going until you find the ones that are just right for you.
Pick the best answers – It can be tempting to settle for what’s out there, but spending the time to land a great job and form a wonderful relationship is always worth it. There are many options out there. Look them over carefully and learn from each one. You will know when you find the right ones.
