Can Music Really Affect Your Health?

By Tom Herrin

Most people have likely had some kind of experience with listening to music and having it establish some kinds of feelings.  For some, it can motivate them to work hard to a heavier beat. For others, it may slow things down almost like a sedative. There are all kinds of music and all kinds of people.  One kind of music that has been found to have a soothing effect on health for years is jazz. While some believe it is something for those who are out of a different time and place, many have come to realize it can have some great benefits to health.

It May Help You Focus

Listening to music has a way of piercing people in a way that nothing else can.  Whether it is the songs they heard when they fell in love or some they heard at some time in life when they were at their lowest, it has the ability to help them recall emotions.  It appears that listening to jazz can help initiate theta waves which are highly creative. When people listen and respond this way, they may be more productive at work or whatever endeavor they are involved in.

It May Help Relieve Pain

Many people have probably had the experience of drowning some kind of pain out with music.  Listening to jazz can help to reduce pain. In studies, people have been known to have less pain with headaches as well as many other kinds of pain.  Music therapy has been used increasingly as a means of improving some of those individuals who are suffering. These results have been consistent after listening to jazz for an hour per week.

It May Reduce Stress

A lot of us have likely experienced the effects of listening to some kind of music in order to relax.  Listening to slower music such as jazz before going to bed has shown to help people to sleep better. So many of us have sleep problems that we usually welcome anything that helps to encourage it.  I enjoy listening to jazz anytime I am wanting to relax. We all know that when we can reduce stress in some way, we can relax and rest more effectively. If you are struggling with this issue, put on a little jazz and let your mind and body rest.
