Take Precautions for Training in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
As temperatures begin to get colder, many people find themselves forced to change their conditioning program. It is still critical to get in some kind of a workout, but special attention should be paid to see that those areas of potential health programs are taken care of as needed. Even though everyone doesn't have specialized facilities for training in the cold, they can do an adequate job of being physically fit and prepared. The main thing is to be better prepared and consider those things that need special attention. A good plan can head off problems and bring about good results.
Remember the Importance of Layers
Dressing in layers is much better than wearing excessive amounts of clothing that may be restrictive and retain excessive heat. There are plenty of types of clothing that can breathe and help to keep people dry. The one constant about layers is that if it is too warm, people can always take some off and still have enough to stay comfortable.
Warming up is Vitally Important
Most people who work out in some form warm up before doing anything really active or strenuous. Too often, people skimp on the warm-up and fail to spend a sufficient amount of time doing so. It is even more critical in the cold weather than in warmer temps. It is a good way to increase blood flow and reduce the number of muscle injuries. It also serves as an effective way to get the mind in gear enough to improve motivation.
Find a Companion
It is pretty easy to simply do nothing if there is no one to really have to answer to. At times, I find it difficult to get myself going, especially when it is colder. It is a lot easier when I have someone else waiting for me. It may be a combination of rising to someone else's expectation and wanting to gain more acceptance. Either way, it seems to be more effective to work out with a buddy. I have a much harder time letting the thought pass when I feel as if someone is waiting on me.
