Do You Think About Your Gait?

By Tom Herrin

Once people decide that they need to do more walking, they usually leave the rest up to what they may consider nature.  In other words, they just take off.  The only decisions they may make are how long and how fast.  There is really more to it if they want to maximize their effort.  Getting the most out of what effort they make can mean a difference in efficiency and product.  Is walking doing any good, or is walking simply satisfying the feeling that they are taking action of some kind?  There are actually some methods that can improve success for walking.

Posture Is Important Even in Walking

Good posture is a critical part of doing any kind of physical activity with some success.  Correct posture can enable a person to breathe right and take advantage of the experience.  This good posture will allow people to take in a full amount of air.  It will also help to avoid cramping and other things related to bad form.  Slouching while walking can create issues that are quite counterproductive.

A Few Ideas for Better Walking Posture

Looking for some ways to improve walking form?  Here are a few tips:

  • Stand straight with feet apart; keep feet pointed ahead
  • Avoid arching your back
  • Focus your eyes ahead on a point ahead, maybe 20 feet
  • Keep your head relatively level to the ground
  • Allow your arms to relax and fall at your side while keeping shoulders somewhat back

Adding these to things people do may help develop some good habits.

Add Some Good Arm Motion

Many people swing their arms in various ways as they walk.  Some kind of counter motion is necessary in order to make the most out of the effort.  A good pace of moving your arms may help you develop a rhythm that can make the activity a little less of a chore and more enjoyable.  Anytime you are striving to improve the quality of your efforts, adding a little personal style may be just what it takes to be successful.  I try a few different things when I walk.  Depending on how far, what the weather is like, and how much time I have, having a little variation in my motion can be a good thing for me.  Make your walk something personal for you.
