Get Your Kids Moving This Summer

By Donna Stark

Children have a few more weeks before school is over and their summertime officially starts, so now's the time for us parents to figure out how to keep them active during their break. Summertime is the perfect occasion to get the little ones outdoors, but it can certainly be a struggle, can't it? Especially when air conditioning and technology is beckoning them back inside. It's important though to remain strong because participating in daily physical activity helps strengthen bones and muscles, whereas that sedentary lifestyle does just the opposite!

Building Strong Kids

So what's a parent to do? What does it take to get their children interested and motivated to go outside and play? Simply telling them that it's good for their health doesn't always work (as we can see from the untouched carrots on their plates), so a little creativity may be in order. Here are some suggestions.

Get Active as a Family

Start making a habit of being physically active as a family. In place of heading to the movie theater every Saturday night, change it up a bit and get moving! Invest in some bikes for everyone, head to an indoor rock-climbing facility, or go roller skating! The excitement of trying new things will help your children forget that they are actually getting a workout in.

Put Your Kids to Work

"A little work never hurt anybody." That's what my mom used to always say as we begrudgingly headed to our backyard garden, and she was right. So go ahead and add some age-appropriate physical activities to your child's chore list, such as yard work, carrying in the groceries, or walking the dog.

Sign Them up for a Sport

Summertime sports are a great way to stay active and make new friends! Look for local sports camps or community recreating leagues. Ask around and find out what your children's friends are signing up for to get them even more excited!

Choose the Good Old Standbys

There is nothing wrong with simply heading to the local pool, park, or playground either! In fact, those are what summers are all about! Pack up your gear, bring a picnic lunch, and make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen to last the day. By being fully prepared, your day is sure to be a blast!

Benefits of Movement

There are a ton of benefits that come along with physical activity, no matter what your age, so get up and go! Keeping your body in motion helps to improve heart health, strengthen bones and muscles, support good posture, and encourage healthy growth and development. It's the perfect way to set your children up for success and optimal health in their future!
