Anxiety is no joke. It's a problem that plagues thousands of people all over the country. It seems as though we're becoming more and more anxious as a society. We're constantly worrying, constantly obsessing over what could go wrong -- or worse, worrying over getting everything perfect. But perhaps the worst scenario is when our anxiety decides to go into overdrive. We no longer feel a little anxious; we're having an anxiety attack. While these can sometimes be debilitating, there are things we can do to ease the feeling and bring us back into functioning mode. Recognize the Situation
The first thing that we have to do is recognize that our problems are just anxiety. We're not in immediate danger. We're not in a terrible situation. We're just anxious. If you can first get yourself to understand that everything you're feeling is anxiety, you can begin the process of slowing down your thoughts and easing our body into a more comfortable state.
Take Deep Breaths
Anxiety tends to speed up our heart and our breathing. If you feel an attack, force yourself to take very slow, very deliberate breaths. This slows your breathing pattern, which can then help to slow your heart rate. Forcing your body to calm down can reverse the feelings of anxiety and bring a sense of calm into your whole being.
Find a Concentration Point
If you can find something near you to focus on, it can help your brain stop with the never-ending thoughts. Find a person, an object, a pretty flower -- anything! Focus on this object noticing all of its traits. Note the color, the texture, the smell. This is a process called grounding, and it takes you out of your head and puts you into reality. Though it can take some practice, many find this process to be one of the most beneficial for long-term wellness.
Anxiety is really hard on both body and mind. When it gets out of control, it can make us feel sick, and worse, it can make participating in everyday life almost impossible.
