Season Your Food for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

Some people believe that healthy food can be pretty bland.  At times, there may be some truth to that. The fact is that a lot of pretty bad tasting food has been offered as the answer to healthy meals.  For those who have been burned by some of these power foods, a little more seasoning can make a real difference in taste as well as health. Garlic is an herb that has been used to enhance flavor for years.  People from many different groups have also subscribed to its health benefits and swear by the results. More modern methods of assessing the effects of it have proven many of these ideas to be fact.

It May Improve the Blood and Circulatory System

Apparently the polysulfides are able to help the blood vessels to be more flexible.  When they can widen under pressure, they can save stress on the walls of the vessels.  In one study of people who were taking medication with poor results, 1 gram of garlic per day brought about significant reduction of blood pressure.

It May Lower LDL Levels

A large number of people seem to have problems with cholesterol today.  Poor diets and lack of exercise may be to blame in some cases. Garlic has shown to be reasonably successful in helping to address some of these issues.  Many people include it in their diets to help manage their cholesterol. Though it has no effect on HDL or triglycerides, garlic has shown the ability to reduce LDL, or bad cholesterol, by as much as 10 to 15 percent.  This is a pretty sizeable amount and well worth the small investment that is made in the garlic.

It May Prevent Blood Clots

As people age, it quite common for them to have problems with the thickness of their blood.  Blood thinners are prescribed in a lot of these cases. It may not always be necessary if we will simply take preventative measures.  Drinking more water can be critical. It is one of my personal challenges. Along with that, there are a few other things that may help.  Garlic has a pretty good success rate for helping to prevent clots. While it may not be something that is a guarantee, its track record of helping to prevent clots makes it something to consider adding to your diet.  The other thing is, it can provide some really good flavor to that bland diet.
