Get Fruity With Fall!
By Donna Stark
There are some very obvious differences when summer turns to fall, but the color of the leaves and the clothes we wear aren't the only things that change when the temperatures start to cool down. Have you noticed anything different at your local farmers market and grocery store. Have you been to one lately? Well if you have, you may have observed that where the strawberries, cantaloupe, and watermelon once were, there are now piles of new and different fruit. And these piles signify to us all that a brand new harvest is here! Let's take a look at a few of fall's most popular.
Apples
With so many delicious varieties to choose from, it's no surprise that apples are one of the most popular fruits during fall. In fact, you could probably try a new variety every week and still have some left over to choose from at the end of the season. But hey, that's not a bad idea! Think of all the different recipes you can try! And even if you don't want to spend your time in the kitchen cooking and baking for hours on end, apples are the perfect snack to grab and go.
Pears
Another fruit that tops the list of "things that scream fall" is the mouth-watering pear. Pears are great to eat on their own, to toss into salads, or to make delicious desserts with, and just like apples, they are a great source of fiber.
Cranberries
There is nothing like homemade cranberry sauce with your Thanksgiving meal, but guess what? You don't have to wait for the end of November to enjoy these sweet, tasty morsels! Cranberry season generally starts mid-September, so start adding them to your meals now! They are the perfect ingredient for oatmeal, muffins, scones, and bread. You can even add them to wild rice for a sweet change in flavor!
Figs
Figs are extremely versatile and can be eaten with both savory and sweet dishes. Add some fresh figs to a cheese and meat board, wrap them in prosciutto, serve them alongside roasted sweet potatoes, or create some of the most heavenly desserts and preserves with your bounty. You really can't go wrong with how you use them!
Getting Fruity With Your Fall Favorites
There are plenty of places to pick up these fall favorites, but if you really want to experience the best-tasting fruits of the season, be sure to hit your local farmers market! There is nothing like the seasonal produce that you can get from the farmers and growers that live right in your neighborhood!
