How to Make Yourself a Priority

By Sara Butler

How many times throughout the day do you wish you had more time for yourself? Life can feel crazy and busy at times and finding the time for yourself always seems to get pushed back. Creating more time for yourself should be one of your goals going forward. But as you probably know, it’s often something easier said than done. Here are a few tips to help you find some time for yourself.

Decide You Deserve It

The first thing you need to do if you want to try and carve out time for yourself is to understand that you deserve it. Don’t feel guilty about taking time for you and realize that in the grand scheme of things, finding time for you will be beneficial to everyone in your life. You can’t give your best if you’re being pulled in too many different directions and feeling frazzled. If you consistently have time to care for yourself, then it can help you feel less stressed and tired.

Decide What You Want to Do

You can choose to spend time on yourself any way you want. Determining what you want to do with your time is an individual thing, but make sure to settle for something that will help you relax, feel rejuvenated, and make you happy. Make a list of ideas and keep it handy when you begin scheduling all that spectacular me time.

Uncover Time Wasters

Think about your day and evaluate the small things that may be wasting your time each day. If you check your emails constantly or run to the grocery store each day instead of doing one shopping trip each week, then you may be wasting precious moments you could devote to me time. Organize the things you need to do each week in order to find extra time.

Just Say No

If you don’t know how to say no to people, then you need to learn. So many people fall into the trap of committing themselves to things they don’t want to do simply because they find it difficult to say no. Say no to things that you don’t want to do, you don’t value, and that don’t bring you joy or satisfaction.

Ask for Help

Another thing people don’t do enough is ask for help. How much time do you spend each week taking care of chores that other people in your family are perfectly capable of doing? Ask for help and watch how much more time you have for other things – things such as me time!

If you don't make yourself a priority, then no one else will! So carve out time for yourself and reap the health benefits.
