How to Help Your Child Build Self-Esteem

By Sara Butler

Raising kids is a big job. Raising kids with adequate self-confidence to help them thrive throughout their lives is an even bigger job, but one well worth doing. It's important for parents to realize the role they play in helping a child to become self-confident and build self-esteem. That's why it's crucial to know how and what to do to help your child as they grow. Here are some tips and tricks parents can use to help their child develop self-confidence.

Show Your Child

When you help your child to build up their self-esteem, then you are simply showing that you care for them and love them regardless of how they act or what they do. Every time you tell them how proud you are or praise them for something they've done, then you're helping them to build self-esteem.

Self-esteem helps to build self-confidence because it allows your child to feel secure enough to explore the world on their own. They know that even if they make mistakes that you'll be there to support them no matter what. This makes it much easier for them to explore the world and embrace it with confidence.

Play With Them

All children learn through play and in interaction with other people. Parents are their child's first playmate and because of this, you have a big influence on their sense of self. That's why it critical that parents be present by spending time together, playing with their kids, and generally just enjoying things together. This is how your children see that they are valuable and worth the investment of their time, something that serves to build their self-esteem further.

Praise Them

No matter how old your child is they need to hear you praise them. Positive feedback and praise are two of the ways that children tend to measure their worth. That makes it important to do but also important to be realistic about.

Praise is a valuable tool but be careful not to overuse it. Constant praise can actually backfire and cause your child to lack motivation to push out of their comfort zone and explore new things. Show appreciation for their abilities to overcome obstacles and try new things and you'll provide confidence for them that will last them their entire lives.

Raising kids is complicated, but making sure you raise a confident child doesn't have to be!
