Should You See a Chiropractor for Low Back Pain?
By Randi Morse
It is estimated that 85 percent of people have back pain that is serious enough they book an appointment with their physician. One of the problems with low back pain is that doctors often don't know what causes it. There are many things that can cause pain in the lower back, and while some back pain is easily relieved with rest, heat, pain relievers, and stretching, other low back pain seems to be immune to traditional treatment options. Experiencing this pain can cause issues in your daily life, but recent research is proving that seeking chiropractic care when you have low back pain may be the best idea.
The Study
In 2018, researchers decided to figure out, once and for all, if chiropractic care actually helped low back pain or not. In order to do this, researchers found 750 members of the military, all of whom were active duty and all of whom complained of back pain, to agree to be in the study. Half of the participants of the study were assigned to doctors and received what is known as traditional care, which includes treatments like stretching, rest, and anti-inflammatory medication. The other half of the participants received the usual care along with 12 visits to a chiropractor.
The Results
The researchers allowed the participants to be treated for six weeks, and the results were definitely telling. After six weeks the participants who received the care along with chiropractic treatments said that they needed much less pain medication to get through the day and had a great deal less pain. They were more satisfied with their treatment and discovered that they had improvement in the functionality of their lower back.
The Conclusion
The conclusion of this study proves that receiving chiropractic care for low back pain helps to allow for a more thorough healing in a much faster time. Even though the study only lasted for six weeks, the military personnel found a great deal of satisfaction and relief from the visits to a chiropractor.
