How to Build a Happy and Healthy Relationship

By Sabine Dorothy Docteur

Relationships are part of our everyday lives. Even if you are an individual who is introverted and prefers to be alone most times, you probably enjoy a handful of close relationships. Because of the way that we are built, relationships with others help us to maintain emotional health. Though we have the need to be connected with one another, having healthy relationships takes some work. Here are some steps we can take to ensure that the relationships we find ourselves in are healthy and beneficial to our well-being.

Put Yourself as a Priority

We have heard that one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. This is an analogy that can also pertain to human connections. When we go into friendships and relationships without addressing our own issues, we are bound to bring that baggage into the connection with another person. It is essential to put yourself first and take care of any emotional and psychological issues that can negatively affect your relationship with others. It is also just as crucial to know the intricacies about you that may potentially harm others when they are in a connection with you. Truly understanding yourself is the foundation to building healthy friendships and romantic relationships with others.

Communication Is Key

Communication is an essential component of any relationship. This is because most individuals cannot just take a look at you and understand your feelings. Learning to articulate your desires, wants, and needs will serve as a necessary element to build a wholesome connection. Interactions can be in the form of verbal, written and nonverbal cues. Regardless of the way you articulate your feelings, be sure to establish an open line of communication.

Avoid Toxic Connections

After understanding all of your great traits and some of the negative ones that may affect others, it is important to keep a lookout for toxic traits from the people in our circle. This is to say that you must be vigilant and alert to protect your peace. Be assertive and avoid any connection that does not add positivity to your lives.

It is a privilege to connect with like-minded individuals and to develop deep relationships because they add value to our lives. Take your time to genuinely engage in meaningful connections. Remember that contribution from both individuals is necessary to build a strong foundation that will last a lifetime. Even while being cautious, be open to making new friends and cultivate fulfilling relationships because that will add to your overall well-being.
