Improve Your Health Every Day of the Week

By Donna Stark

If my child only put forth 75 percent of their effort on a project, I certainly wouldn't expect them to get a good grade. I also wouldn't expect to see any great results if the painter of my house knew he was going to get 25 percent less than what he was worth. It's clear that if you want to see great results, you have to be all in. So it's no surprise to me when I see people who are committed to their health and fitness goals every day of the week find their success. And it's also no surprise to me to see those who take the weekends off continue to struggle to reach theirs.

Consistency is Key

Sure, we all like to have the weekend off. I mean, what's the point of working if you don't have the weekends, right? But if you want to reach specific health and fitness goals, the way you spend your time on the weekends is important. You can still have fun, but you need to watch how much fun you are really having because you could be putting all of that hard work during the week to waste.

  • Diet - Maybe you don't plan to eat out a lot, but with the way your social calendar has been filling up, you may be surprised by how many times you do. Eating out on a Friday night with your spouse can easily turn into that and a Saturday lunch with friends. Which can then easily turn into Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, and Sunday morning brunch after church. All of these unplanned "extras" can significantly stall your progress during the week, so pay attention to them.
  • Exercise - Yes, it's the weekend and that means family time for many, but that shouldn't keep you from remaining consistent with your fitness routine. Try to fit it in before everyone wakes up or take your children to your gym's childcare room. But if you still prefer family over workouts, include them in! Go for a bike ride, swim some laps together, or hit the mountains for an early morning hike.
  • Sleep - Don't start your week off on the wrong foot simply because you are sleep-deprived. Make sure you maintain a consistent sleep routine over the weekend as well. Those all-night, play-until-morning video game marathons will not do you any favors come Monday morning, so try to wake up and go to bed around the same time as you do during the week.

Reach Your Goals

You've been told this before, and it really is true. The key to reaching your goals and finding success is the successful combination of commitment, effort, and consistency. So take some time to carefully analyze your weekend habits and be careful to avoid having those habits stall your own goals.
