4 Sun Protection Tips for Toddlers
By Brandi Goodman
UV Safety Month arrives in July. You don't have to wait until summer's well underway to learn about staying safe from harmful rays. Any time the sun is out and shining, you should be doing what you can to keep yourself -- and especially your little ones -- protected. These four sun protection tips for toddlers can help you keep your tots safe all season long.
Keep Them Covered
No one should really be in bikinis at the beach, particularly a young toddler. The more of their body that's exposed, the greater potential for developing burns. This can result in skin cancer later in life. It's important to keep your kids covered when they're outside. A long-sleeved swimsuit and shorts is a far better option for young ones so their skin is not exposed to the sun's harmful UV rays.
Use Pop-Up Tents or Umbrellas at the Beach
You can spend your summer days at the beach even with a young one in tow. You just need to be sure to bring a pop-up tent or umbrellas along so there's some shaded protection for them to sit under. It isn't wise to let your kiddo sit out all day in the scorching sun. Keep them shaded during midday hours at least when the sun's rays are at their deadliest.
Apply Sunscreen Throughout the Day
Don't apply sunscreen to your kiddos once and call it good. You really should be applying it all throughout the day if you want it to continue having a positive affect. Water and sweat will cause the sunscreen to wear off quickly. You'll need a second, third, and even more applications if you intend on staying in the sun for several hours or longer.
Give Them Glasses
Toddlers may not want to keep a pair of sunglasses on their face, but do what you can to have them wear a pair. Sunglasses do a lot to protect the eyes from damaging rays. Stores sell smaller pairs perfect for toddler-sized faces. Encourage your kids to wear them so their eyes do not get damaged looking at the sun when it's shining.
Toddlers need extra protection from the sun so they do not become overheated. Their tiny bodies are far more likely to become exhausted in the sun than an adult. Although, adults and teens alike should also be aware of the dangers of the sun and follow these precautions. No one is immune to the harmful effects.
