Don't Suffer From the Pain of Outdoor Chores!

By Brandi Goodman

When you own a home, numerous outdoor chores come along with it. Whether you need to mow the grass, rake the leaves, clear the gutters, or shovel snow from the driveway, these tasks all require physical effort. Don't suffer from the pain of outdoor chores. Use caution, proper tools, and proper posture to ensure a valiant effort that is free from discomfort.

Tips for Mowing the Grass

You don't have to use the old-style push-mower that has you walking behind the machine for an extended period trying to cut your grass properly. Instead, use a riding mower. Sit upright with your back against the seat and ride along in style as your yard work gets completed promptly. It's much easier on your body.

Tips for Raking the Leaves

Too many people stick to one arm when they're raking. This can quickly lead to pain on that side. You should be switching your rake into the opposite hand frequently to get even use out of both sides of your body. Make sure you're also stepping forward with one foot in a lunge motion and keeping your body upright rather than trying to lean down. It will save you some back pain.

Tips for Clearing the Gutters

Climbing on the roof and clearing the gutters is one of the more dangerous chores you'll have to complete. Be extremely careful when doing this task, ensuring someone else is with you to hold the ladder to start. You should always wear sturdy shoes and a good pair of gloves so you can maintain your balance and get rid of the debris easily without grabbing handfuls of wet gunk.

Tips for Shoveling Snow

Compacted snow in your shovel weighs a lot more than you think. A full shovel-full could put up to 25 pounds in your hands. You should be careful not to overload your tool. It's also important that you deposit your snow in the yard by walking over and turning your shovel. You shouldn't stand back and throw it to the side, as this will cause discomfort to your back, shoulders, and arms.

Pain isn't the norm when you're doing work outside. You should be able to get your chores and yard work accomplished with as little discomfort as possible. Follow the tips provided and maintain the correct form as you perform these tasks and you should be able to head back inside with a job well done and a body that feels fine.
