Healthy Home Tips for the Winter
By Brandi Goodman
The winter season sees a spread of illness unlike any other time of year. It's incredibly common for people to get sick and feel under the weather during the cold months. Do what you can to follow these healthy home tips for the winter so you can keep your household safe from the cold and flu -- as well as other winter struggles.
Disinfect Surfaces Daily
Every surface you touch gets infected with the germs on your hands. The next person who touches that same area then touches those germs and spreads them further throughout the house. Disinfect all surfaces daily -- and regularly throughout the day -- so you can avoid this spread and keep your home as clean as possible.
Stock Up on Sickness Supplies
When you're feeling sick, you're going to need some medicine to help you minimize your symptoms and get you through it. Stock up on sickness supplies now so you have everything you need when illness strikes. Keep some 7UP, Sprite, or ginger ale in your cabinet. These soda pops can help settle your stomach when you're feeling queasy and can't keep water down. You should also have cough drops, cold medicine, and something along the lines of a Tylenol PM that can help you with aches and get you the rest you need.
Have the Heating System and/or Chimney Cleaned
Chances are, you'll turn on your heat system when it gets cold outside or start a fire if you have a fireplace. You need to be sure to have your chimney and heating system both cleaned thoroughly so they're safe to use. You also want them free from debris and dust, both of which are unsafe to breathe in and can cause respiratory problems.
Keep a Mat By the Door
The snow, sludge, and mud from outside will all be tracked into your home by your boots. Make sure you keep a mat by the door so you can take your boots and other winter gear off promptly. You want to keep winter-wear in one place so the sludge doesn't get dragged into the house and cause a mess. You don't know what bacteria and other things are being brought inside that can contaminate your house and your family.
With some healthy home tips considered this winter, you can keep your home -- and yourself -- as safe as possible. Sickness spreads quickly during the winter months. Always do what you can to keep your household feeling well by maintaining cleanliness and finding the best prevention methods.
