Vitamins for Men: What You Need and Why
By Genevieve Cunningham
Every person’s body is wired just a little bit differently. And because of this, every person’s body has different needs. Sometimes, we can group these needs together based on age or gender. Babies require different nutritional needs than adults. Men require different nutritional needs than women. It’s normal and natural. So, what about based on age and gender? Do needs change when a particular gender begins reaching middle age and beyond? Possibly. Take a look at these vitamins that are key to men during the aging process.
Vitamin B
Men, especially those who are over the age of 50, may need their Vitamin B levels checked. This age group often has lower counts of B12 and B6, two very important vitamins for energy as well as cognitive function. When men have a deficiency in either of these, they may experience weakness, excessive fatigue, and extreme confusion. If you’re found to be deficient in either of these two areas, or if your doctor gives you the OK, try adding a simple B complex supplement to your morning routine.
Vitamin D
This vitamin is sometimes a bit tricky. We get most of our Vitamin D through absorption of the sun’s rays. As we get older, our bodies may have a harder time absorbing the appropriate amount of Vitamin D, thus making us deficient. Signs that you need a little more Vitamin D might include a persistent bout of the blues, bone achiness, and confusion. If you suspect a deficiency in this area, consult with your doctor to get the right amount of supplementation for your body.
Calcium
While women get a lot of attention in the way of a calcium supplement, men often get overlooked. But just like women, men often lose bone density with age. The way to combat this is by ingesting more calcium. This can be done through a healthy diet including milk, yogurt, and cheese, and it can also be done by adding a simple supplement to your daily regimen.
It’s important for every person, regardless of gender, to get the proper nutrients for your body. If you’re a man and looking for a head start, begin with these supplements. They may help you regain some strength and overall health so that you can live a happy and productive life for years into the future.
