3 Reasons to Fight the Obesity Epidemic

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's no secret that most people in today's world could stand to lose a few pounds. In fact, the rate of obesity is higher than ever before. Adults, as well as children, are carrying around more extra weight than any time in previous history. While a few extra pounds probably aren't a big deal, carrying around too many can be incredibly damaging to your health. If you're getting comfortable with a bit of extra weight, take a look at these reasons why our society should fight the climbing rate of obesity.

It’s Bad for the Heart

When you carry around too much weight, the heart has to work much harder. It's the heart's job to pump blood to the rest of the body, and the bigger the body, the harder the heart has to work. Obesity is also often accompanied by clogged arteries, which doubles the work done by the heart. It's no secret that being obese significantly heightens the risk of heart disease. If you want to keep your heart healthy, it's important to manage your weight and stay at a healthy body fat percentage.

It Heightens the Risk of Disease

Heart disease has already been mentioned, but the truth is that obesity can heighten the risk of other diseases as well. When a person carries around too much weight, the risk of diabetes is also raised. It's also more likely to have problems with blood pressure and circulation. If you want to keep the risk of significant health problems lower, managing weight is critical.

It Hurts

Our bodies were only made to carry around a particular amount of weight. While it's OK if this fluctuates a little bit, carrying around a significant amount more can literally make your body hurt. People who are considered to be obese are more likely to suffer from joint pain, especially in the knees and hips. If you're interested in living a life that is mostly pain free, then it's important to keep the extra weight off of your body.

Absolutely no one is expecting perfection. No one is the perfect weight. No one has the perfect body, nor should they. But being comfortable with poor health is only damaging to yourself in the long run. To protect your health and your life, get a healthy diet plan, a good exercise routine, and keep yourself healthy and strong for years to come.
