3 Ways to Alleviate Post Workout Soreness
By Genevieve Cunningham
Working out is one of the staples of a healthy life. We need exercise to burn calories, build strong muscles, and boost our overall wellness. And while most people don't necessarily mind the exercise part, they're not too keen on the post workout soreness. So what are we to do? If you would like to minimize the aches and pains that come with exercise, take a look at these tips for easing the soreness.
Get a Massage
A massage can really do wonders for sore muscles. A masseuse is trained in the art of alleviating knots, pain, and tension from your body. And if you can’t find or don’t have the money for a professional, even a massage from a loved one can work out a bit of stiffness. Just be aware that the massage, in and of itself, might hurt a bit. But the relief felt after the massage will be worth going through a bit of discomfort for that sweet end result.
Stretch and Stretch Again
Stretching should be a staple in your routine anyway. When you’re sore from a workout, make sure that you stretch as soon as the workout is over. And later that night, stretch again. Soreness tends to set in after some time has passed, so don’t be surprised if you’re not sore until the day after. But no matter when the soreness sets in, keep stretching! It might not alleviate all of the pain, but it will keep at least some of the discomfort at bay.
Get in a Sauna
The hot steamy air of a sauna works to open the pores and help you sweat out impurities. But you know what else it’s good for? Alleviating stiffness from the muscles! If you have access, jump in a sauna after a workout, and possibly the next day, too. If you don’t have access to a sauna, a hot shower will do just as well. Close the door to the bathroom, get the shower as hot as you can stand it, and let the steam fill the room. Then allow the hot air and water to relax each muscle and relieve some of that constant nagging pain.
Working out gets a lot easier if you’re not in pain. While you won’t be able to avoid all pain, you can definitely keep it manageable with these tips. Incorporate these ideas into your life, and you may notice a big difference in your health and happiness right away.
