How to Care for Your Skin in the Winter
By Genevieve Cunningham
The cold weather brings so much fun into our lives. Since it comes with the holidays, it brings traditions and family time and yummy food. Most people really look forward to this time of year. But the cold weather also brings new problems into our lives. It brings an influx of colds and the flu. It brings the challenge of staying warm. And an unexpected and frustrating problem that it brings -- skin issues. We all know that protecting our skin in the summer is important, but we often forget in the cooler months of the year. Of course, winter time skincare is still necessary. So what precautions should we be taking as the cold winds blow in? To keep your skin in optimal condition, take a look at these tips to try this season.
You Still Need Sun Protection
It's easy to think that protecting yourself from the sun only matters in the hot summer months, but the sun's still shining in the winter. Sure, it's not as direct, but it's still there, and those harmful rays are still reaching our skin. Make sure that you don't slack on your sunscreen routine in the fall and winter. It should be applied every morning and reapplied throughout the day for optimal protection.
You Need More Moisturizer
The skin tends to get really dry in the cold months. You may have noticed things such as cracked lips, ashy skin, or even an ever present static around your body. All of these happen because it's so dry. Besides drinking plenty of water, you should also be moisturizing more than usual. Apply in the morning, and then again throughout the day as you feel that dryness creeping in.
You Need to Eat Well
Your diet matters. In the winter, we tend to eat more sweets and comfort foods. But if we eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, then our skin is more likely to get what it needs to remain healthy. This means keeping your diet stocked of fruits and veggies, proteins, lots of leafy greens, and water. The better your diet, the healthier your body, including the health of the skin.
The winter is not a time to be loose in your skincare routine. It's a time to really take care of your skin and nourish it. Use these tips to keep your skin healthy during the cold months -- and to maintain beautiful skin all year long and for the rest of your life.
