Save Your Vision With These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

Your vision starts to deteriorate as you age. There are many things in this world that impact your eyesight and make it more and more difficult to see well. Consider these tips in an attempt to save your vision.

Wear Sunglasses

Any day the sun is shining, whether it's hot and sunny or cold and snowy, you should be wearing sunglasses. The sun's UV rays can do damage to the eyes if you ever look directly at it -- and can also be harmful with the reflection off some surfaces. Sunglasses -- particularly those with UV protection -- can be extremely helpful in keeping the harmful rays out of your eyes and preventing damage.

Get Regular Eye Exams

You should be getting an eye exam every couple of years at the least. Yearly may be recommended if you have known eye struggles. It's important to see an eye doctor who has an understanding of how the eyes should work and what can deter them from doing so. You may need glasses or contacts to help you see better if your vision is already struggling. An eye exam can also detect potential problems earlier so the damage isn't so detrimental to your overall eye health.

Maintain a Vitamin-Rich Diet

Certain vitamins are beneficial for eyesight. If you're regularly eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, zinc, and lutein, you're more likely to experience better eye health. Carrots, kale, eggs, fish, sunflower seeds, and oranges are some of the best menu additions for those hoping to maintain their vision.

Utilize Safety Glasses

Perhaps you plan on working on a home project. When you're going to spray the ceiling down with chemicals for cleaning, for example, make sure your eyes are protected. If you're cutting a piece of wood, protect your eyes then too. Maybe your job requires you to work with tools that can cause damage to your eyes. This also requires proper protection. Safety glasses should be utilized in many instances so no damage occurs to your eyes.

Look Away From the Screen

Your phone screen, computer screen, and screen on any other device you use can cause damage to your eyesight. Don't stare at these things for too long. Make sure you're looking away often and giving your eyes a rest so they don't become tired and overwhelmed. This can dry your eyes out quickly and make them hurt.

You need your eyes to see, yet so many people do things that are detrimental to their eyesight. Make sure to keep these tips in mind at all times and keep your eyes protected so your vision remains intact for as long as possible.
